Searching for Jobs in the wrong places…

0
career-development

In life we make the challenge of finding employment even harder by telling our children — our young people entering the workforce — to look for jobs where few jobs exist for them.
We tell them to go to school K-12th grade and graduate (great).
And then we tell them to go to college and graduate (still great).
And then we tell them to go and work for a big company or government. Neither of which are hiring. This is not a knock on big  (more…)

You can place a check beside each characteristic that you feel that you possess. This way, you can see how you stack up. Even if you don’t have all of these characteristics, don’t fret. Most can be learned with practice and by developing a winning attitude, especially if you set goals and apply yourself, through strategic planning, to reach those goals in incremental and measurable stages.

The Home Business Musts
Like any activity you pursue, there are certain musts that are required to be successful in a chosen activity. (more…)

4 Tips for Training Your Employees to Think Like a CEO

0

4tipsThose rules still guide how I train all of my employees to “think and act like CEOs.”
Rule 1: Develop a shared company vision.Aside from detailing the specific day-to-day tasks of each employee’s role on the first day, make a point to discuss how an entry-level sales job directly affects the company’s annual goals. As employees start to envision how their actions lead to overall company success, they will better understand how a CEO strategizes.

Similarly, set outward company goals that employees can attach themselves to professionally. (more…)

How to Be a Successful Business Owner

0

how21. Lots of people have the dream, but they get bogged down in the details of how to go about it. While this article isn’t meant to serve as a complete business start-up guide, it will give you an idea of some of the steps involved in starting your own business.

2. Hire Professionals
The most important professionals you’ll need at the beginning are a lawyer and an accountant. The lawyer can help you decide if you want to be a corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship, or some other type of company. A good accountant can help you make this decision based on which will be most advantageous to you from a tax angle. A lawyer can also help you register your business and get any licenses and permits you will need, and can advise you about patenting your idea (more…)

Corporate Training Initiative Ahead

0

ctaaOn occasion, I come across organizations that feel that they must set up training programs to meet some identified (or ill-identified) corporate need. Whether it is sexual harassment programs, multi-cultural interventions, or any other topic, these across organization programs tend to be top-down driven. That means that the impetus for training comes from senior executives or management, sometimes in conjunction with human resource units.
Is there anything wrong with such initiatives? First, it makes sense that efforts be made to develop a more cohesive organizational culture, or new set of skills across the organization. When participants see the training as irrelevant, or worse, suggestive of skill/attitude deficits on their parts, the result can be wasted resources or worse. (more…)

And let’s face it — nobody can afford to send people for training just for the fun of it. We all expect that training will somehow impact upon a person’s present or future ability to contribute to the employing organization. How do we “make it so”? That’s our topic this month.

General Principles
Getting value from training isn’t magical. There are some general principles that you can adapt to ensure that training for yourself and your staff results in changes in the workplace. First, training that adds value tends to be integrated with other management systems. That is, training decisions and actions are (more…)
